What to expect with a portrait photo session.
Firstly, thank you for your interest in Kendar Photography, whether you are looking for a family photo shoot, perfect picture of your much loved family pet or a combination of the two, it can be a little confusing and daunting. I have compiled this section to help ease those fears and answer some question you may have about the process from booking through to ordering prints.
Booking the session.
As soon as you are ready to book a session, e-mail, instant message or give me a call. We will discuss what type of shoot you are looking for. We will discuss such things like, what you are looking to get out of the session (Family, pet, engagement, etc), possible locations, when is the best time to have the session for you (weekend or weekday) and the cost of the session (price list here). I accept PayPal, Direct bank transfer, Bank/Credit card or you are welcome to pay with cash. I will compile all this information in an e-mail and send it your way. The e-mail will also include information details of the session, how to pay, help on what to wear and a few other bits of helpful information.
Once you have paid your session deposit (non-refundable), your session is booked. I am currently taking bookings from 4-6 weeks ahead and as far out as needed. Autumn and spring session are very popular and tend go very quickly and booked months in advance, so its never too soon to book and reserve your shoot date.
Edited photographs from the session are available within 2 weeks after the session, digital files, prints and canvases are all available to order via my website, other items such as USB sticks and photo books can be ordered via e-mail.
Your photo session.
The photo session length is determined by what you are looking to get out of the session, usually they last 1-2 hours. We will meet at the predetermined location at the scheduled time, go over any specific images you would like capturing and then we get shooting. We will do lots of different poses, using as many different backgrounds whilst walking around the chosen location to get a verity of perspectives.
I try to keep things as relaxed as possible, talk about you and your family, and try not to make it all about posing and forced smiles. I like to capture those candid moments showing the natural you as well as the smiling at the camera ones. I am happy to accommodate any fun posing ideas you might have as well as any props you would like to incorporate.
At the end of the session, I will answer any last questions you might have and then we're all finished.
Added note -
If you have young children, feel free to bring along anything that will keep them happy (e.g. favourite cuddly toy, snacks, drinks, etc). The same goes for your pet too, toys and treats help to focus their attention.
If it's a hot day remember to bring water with you, If it's a cold day, maybe a jacket for in-between shots. If you are planning on a clothing change, remember that this may need to be done in the car as many of the locations are remote.
Feel free to bring any props you find fun (I've had people bring sunglasses, hats, bicycles, dogs, even a horse)
Your photo session is yours so make sure you get the most out of it. If you have ideas of pictures you would like to try and create, then please share these with me.
What happens after your photo shoot.
Once your session is over, I transfer your images onto my computer, backup and begin the editing process. It can take unto 2 weeks to edit and prepare you password protected gallery on my website. At that point I will e-mail you the link and password to your gallery along with ordering information.
My goal is to give you natural, timeless photography that captures your unique personality. That means that throughout my editing process, my goal is tome your photos look as natural as possible whilst still making you look your best. There are beautiful editing techniques out there, and they are changing all the time, however, I want you to look back on your photos in 50 years and be just as impressed as you are now.
You will of course get the traditional "everyone smiling at the camera" but also get the photos of you laughing, interacting with your loved ones, being silly, and just basically pictures of who you really are. We don't all stand together and smile in the same direction, we smile at each other, those images peak so beautifully about the relationships between people, families and of course their pets too.
I will try where possible to include some photographs with an alternative editing process for the purpose of contrast, and if you would like any other images edited this way you are welcome to ask me to do this at this stage.
Once all the images have been edited and uploaded to the gallery you will be able to choose which ones you would like to have printed, made into a canvas or downloaded to share with friends on your social media platforms. Specialty items such as custom photo albums take longer to order and process the time scale will be confirmed at the point of ordering.
I hope that this answers your questions on what is involved in a portrait photography session, if you have any further questions you would like answering, please feel free to contact me.
